Verdicts and rulings 1

  1. Court ruled

A federal judge found he set out to silence foreign students and professors for their views.

After a nine-day trial, Judge William Young found “by clear and convincing evidence” that Rubio and Noem acted “intentionally to chill the rights to freedom of speech and peacefully to assemble” of noncitizen scholars. He found they meant to terrorize pro-Palestinian noncitizens “into silence because their views were unwelcome.” Government witnesses testified no such policy exists. The administration has appealed.

  1. On record

“Every time I find one of these lunatics, I take away their visa.”

He said it when asked about reports of 300 revoked visas, at a press conference where he was also asked about Tufts student Rumeysa Öztürk, detained after co-writing an op-ed. A court later found “there is no evidence that Öztürk did anything but co-author an op-ed” criticizing her university’s position on Israel.
